Manic disorders are rare before puberty. In pre-pubertal children, symptoms of mania may be confused with attention deficit hyperactive disorder. Manic patients present with irritability, euphoria or elated mood and nsomnia. They tend to be hyperactive and may engage in reckless and impulsive behaviour.

Manic episodes may be part of a bipolar affective disorder with episodes of depression and mania. Onset is usually during adolescence or early adulthood. Neuroleptic drugs or lithium are commonly used to control acute episodes.
