Agoraphobia without History of Panic Disorder

A person with this disorder has never had problems that meet criteria for panic disorder. Instead, he or she fears, and may avoid, situations in which it would be difficult or embarrassing to leave in the event of the sud- den onset of anxiety, which may represent a “limited symptom attack” that would not include the range of symptoms associated with a panic attack. Agorapho- bia entails difficulties with travel: either avoidance of travel altogether, or being able to travel only with the aid of a trusted companion, or despite significant dis- comfort.

Finally, it should be noted that patterns meeting criteria for panic disorder but not agoraphobia are classified as panic disorder without agoraphobia; pat- terns consistent with panic disorder but in which an organic factor initiates and maintains the problems are classified as anxiety disorder due to a general medical condition.
