leisure activities and health and mental well-being

An important aspect of health and mental well-being is having a balance betweenwork, leisure and ADLs. Leisure activities are those activities undertaken as a matter of choice and that are found to be pleasing and undertaken in free time. They can include entertainment, recreation, hobbies, sports, visiting and adult education, though this is not an exhaustive list.

Leisure activities can offer opportunity for social participation, creativity and

growth in self-esteem and are therefore an important component of therapeutic interventions. Practitioners can encourage clients to maintain, resume or develop leisure interests as part of their recovery process. This might involve providing the opportunity for clients to undertake leisure activities while receiving acute care or supporting them to participate in unfamiliar activities in which there is the opportunity to learn new skills and discover interests to pursue in the community.
