Things to remember when dealing with someone with a drink problem

• Problem drinking is when a person drinks alcohol at levels that are causing physical, mental or social problems.

• Problem drinking is associated with injuries, bleeding from the stomach, jaundice, repeated infections with sexually transmitted diseases, domestic violence and mental illnesses.

• Most problem drinkers come to health workers with physical problems (such as stomach ulcers) rather than the drinking itself.

• Ask everyone who comes to see you, but especially those with health problems associated with drinking alcohol, about their drinking habits.

• Counselling about stopping or controlling the drinking habit, treatment for withdrawal symptoms, referral to Alcoholics

Anonymous and support to the family are the main treatments.
