Living with a person who has a drinking problem

Problem drinking affects all members of the family. Some relatives blame themselves; reassure them that they are not responsible for the drink problem. Financial difficulties and sexual problems, such as impotence and rape, can cause stress in the relationship.

Violence is often related to relationship difficulties caused by drinking. Relatives of drinkers often suffer mental health problems themselves, particularly depression and anxiety. Support groups for relatives are available in some places. Alternatively, the family could be encouraged to unite around this cause and encourage the drinker to seek help. The real solution lies in the drinker seeking help for a drinking problem.
