Drug abuse is when a person uses a drug repeatedly without any medical reason and this use affects her health in a negative way. As with alcohol, repeated use of drugs that are addictive can cause dependence, which makes the person feel a strong desire to continue taking the drug, even though it may be causing her harm. When an addicted person tries to stop the drug, she feels sick (withdrawal syndrome). There are many types of drug that are abused. Of these, alcohol, tobacco and sleeping pills are described elsewhere in this chapter. These three substances are unique because, in many societies, their use is socially accepted and legal. This section deals with those drugs that are illegal.
