Treatment and management of obsessive-compulsive disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic condition and needs long-term commitment to its management. Cognitive behavioural therapy, advice on management, involving carers and parents and medication have all shown to be effective. Exposure and response prevention has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms. Advice to parents about how to respond to their child’s demands that they take part in ritualized behaviour helps reduce anxiety and tensions in the family. Clomipramine, a tricyclic drug has shown to be effective in symptom reduction, although side effects such as weight gain and sedation can affect compliance. Other drugs which have been found to be effective include f luvoxamine, fluoxetine, sertraline and paroxetine.
