In-patient services
The vast majority of people with intellectual disabilities who have mental
health problems receive treatment in the community. However, some will
require a more structured and controlled environment in which their mental health problems can be assessed and treated. The person will be
more likely to be admitted into hospital if:
They have a severe mental health problem
They do not recognize that they are unwell
They are refusing assessment and treatment
They are presenting with serious risks, such as causing harm to
themselves or others
They or their carers are unable to cope at home
In-patient services include:
 General in-patient services
 Specialist intellectual disabilities in-patient services
