Can conversion disorder happen like an epidemic?

Even though mental illnesses are not infectious, conversion disorder can sometimes occur in many people who are living close together. The typical example is in schoolchildren, often girls. If one girl develops a conversion symptom, some of the other girls may also develop the same symptom, and this gives the appearance of an epidemic. One reason for this is that young people may be more likely to feel that the problem is a serious disease. Because of fear and ignorance, the children feel very stressed and because they already know the nature of the symptom (by seeing it in a fellow student) this stress is

‘converted’ to the same symptom.
