Children with mental retardation are more vulnerable to mental illness. Children with mild mental retardation may become very aware of their limited abilities compared with other children and may
show emotional and behavioural problems in the classroom. As they grow older, their difficulty in making friends may make them depressed and angry. Sexual problems may arise. Children with more severe mental retardation often have brain damage, which can make them more vulnerable to psychoses. If a child with mental retardation shows a change in
behaviour, you should suspect a mental illness.
