Things to remember when dealing with bereavement • Bereavement is the normal human response to losing a loved one through death. • Counsel the person about the loss and ask friends and relatives to provide support. • If grief lasts more than six months, or leads to severe depression or suicidal ideas, then it is abnormal. • Antidepressants may help if there are definite symptoms of depression and anxiety several months after the bereavement.
