Motor neuron diseases (MND) represent a group of
neurological diseases characterized by a progressive
deterioration of the motor neurons in the brain, brainstem,
and spinal cord resulting in muscle weakness and
wasting. Usually, arms and legs are affected first, often
followed by shoulders and other muscles. In most cases,
the intellectual capacity remains unchanged. MND
usually develops in people over the age of 40, with
the highest incidence in the 50–70 years age group.
The clinical subtypes of MND are differentiated by the
major site of degeneration of the motor neurons. They
include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease),
progressive spinal muscular atrophy, progressive
bulbar palsy, and primary lateral sclerosis.
