DEFINING EATING DISORDERS

A person who has an eating disorder has a disturbance of eating habits or weight control behaviour with strong beliefs of what being overweight represents. This disturbance results in significant impairment of physical health or psychosocial functioning but should not be due to a general physical disorder or other mental illness. The three main eating disorders are:

• anorexia nervosa

• bulimia nervosa

• binge eating disorder.

Each condition will be separately discussed dudue to the differing nature of the conditions and their treatment and management.
