Characteristics of women who misuse substances

Characteristics of women who misuse substances Women who misuse substances often share similar characteristics as a result of their own childhood experiences, as well as the effects of their lifestyle being oriented around obtaining drugs. Many have experienced abuse in their own
families and have difficulties managing difficult emotions and anxiety. Diagnoses
of personality disorder, depression and anxiety disorders are common. When
these women become pregnant they may have difficulty accepting the reality of
the unborn child as their focus remains on their dependency needs. Conflict
between the mother’s dependency needs and the baby’s needs can contribute to
a range of emotions including shame and guilt. Parenting is a challenge for
women who themselves have experienced negative care and who find the
demands of nurturing the infant anxiety provoking.
