An incident that makes a person fear for his life or causes him extreme distress is a traumatic event. There are different types of traumatic events:
• Personal trauma. This is an incident that threatens a particular person, for example being raped,
losing a loved one (bereavement), being a victim of crime or being involved in a road traffic accident.
• War and terrorism. The horror of war can be the cause of considerable trauma to both soldiers and civilians .
• Major disasters. Disasters such as airplane crashes, fires and earthquakes can cause trauma to
large numbers of people at the same time.
