Relationship between alcohol and schizophrenia

The studies show that there is relationship between alcohol and schizophrenia. A person with alcohol dependence is more likely to have schizophrenia and a patient with schizophrenia is more likely to exhibit alcohol dependence, than is the general population. Most clinical studies, patient reports and anecdotal clinical observations suggest that excessive use of alcohol leads to a clear exacerbation of the symptoms of schizophrenia. Furthermore, about 30% of patients with comorbidity appear to show a harmful use of alcohol before the fi rst signs of schizophrenia emerge.
