Gender and mental health
Gender inequality is a term used to describe the different way in which men’s and women’s position, roles, rights and powers in a community are practised. In other sections of this manual,
you will have read about some of the more serious consequences of the weaker position of women in our society, such as the fact that they may be victims of domestic violence and rape. These are
examples of how gender inequality influences the personal relationship between a man and a woman. This chapter considers the influence of gender inequality on the way society and the
health system interact with mental health issues in women.
