Foundational Assertions of Mental Health Consultation

Foundational Assertions of Mental Health Consultation
• The consultative relationship is triadic between the consultant, consultee(s)
and client(s).
• The consultant and consultee relate collegially rather than the consultee being
subordinate to the consultant. The consultant and the consultee are seen as experts
in their own areas.
• The content of discussions between the consultant and consultee is specific to
the needs of the client or issue at hand and does not address personal problems of
the consultee.
• Because the consultant is on equal footing and not in a supervisory or authoritative
position over the consultee, the client’s well-being and progress is the responsibility
of the consultee.
• The consultee can choose whether or not to accept the recommendations or guidance
of the consultant.
• The consultative relationship is bound by the guidelines of confidentiality.
• The purpose of the consultation is to assist the consultee with the challenges and
needs of the presenting client and also to increase the consultee’s skills for addressing
future problems independently (Erschul & Martens, 2002).
