Disasters and mental health
Consider some of these experiences which are associated with
disasters:
• your life is threatened;
• close members of your family have suffered serious injury or have died;
• your home has been destroyed (you and your family are homeless);
• your physical health is affected because of lack of drinking water and food.
Such experiences can have a serious effect on mental health. Indeed, many people in disaster
situations suffer mental health problems. The most common problems are depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. Feelings of hopelessness, fear, suicidal thoughts and loss of interest in life are the early signs of mental distress.
