Consultation-Liaison
Consultation-liaison work refers to a mental health professional in a hospital setting who consults with medical professionals on psychological matters. The liaison works
with other disciplines (e.g., medicine, nursing, and social work) to detect, treat, refer, or some combination of these three, those patients who have mental health or stressrelated
issues, especially those that affect their medical treatment. The liaison may
also work with the patient’s family or support system for such things as emotional support.
The liaison also works on improving the overall medical care system, and may conduct research on the interaction of medical and psychiatric comorbidity .
